How to choose well.

• Check that your laptop charges over USB-C: the port often has a small lightning or plug icon. A laptop charged through a round barrel plug won’t work with these chargers.
• Get at least the power of the original charger (60 or 65 W, printed underneath): a weaker charger charges slowly, or not at all when the laptop is working hard.
• Gaming laptops and workstations often need 150 to 300 W through a dedicated plug: a USB-C charger isn’t enough for them.
• Above 60 W, you need a 5 A USB-C cable (100 W or 240 W).

Frequently asked questions

Can you charge a laptop with a phone charger?

With a USB-C Power Delivery charger, often yes, but slowly: a 20 to 30 W adapter can sometimes charge a laptop that is off or asleep, rarely one that is working.

Does a 100 W charger damage a laptop that needs 65 W?

No: the laptop only takes what it accepts. A more powerful charger leaves it headroom and can charge a phone alongside.

Can an Apple charger charge a laptop?

Yes, if the laptop charges over USB-C: Apple chargers follow the USB Power Delivery standard like the others.
