Chargers of 140 W and up.
Beyond 100 W you need USB Power Delivery 3.1: the charger switches to 28 V to deliver 140 W on a single port. That’s what a 16-inch MacBook Pro needs for fast charging. These big chargers also work as a station for a whole desk: computer, phone, tablet and earbuds.

How to choose well.
- For 140 W on one port, you need a PD 3.1 (28 V) charger and a 240 W USB-C cable; a 100 W cable limits it to 100 W.
- The 16-inch MacBook Pro takes its 140 W over MagSafe, with the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable; through one of the Mac’s USB-C ports, it stops at 100 W.
- A 160 W doesn’t charge a Mac faster than a 140 W: the extra power goes to the other plugged-in devices.
- These chargers get warm at full load: leave them in the open rather than behind furniture.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a 140 W charger for a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
For fast charging, yes: about 135 to 140 W with a PD 3.1 charger and the right cable. A 96 or 100 W charger also charges it, more slowly.
Can a 140 W charger charge a phone?
Yes, safely: the phone only takes what it accepts. These chargers often have several ports to charge the phone at the same time as the computer.
