How to choose well.

• How many watts? Find the maximum your device accepts: 20 to 52 W for an iPhone depending on the model, 22 to 53 W for a Samsung Galaxy, 70 W for a MacBook Air. More watts isn’t dangerous, but doesn’t charge faster.
• Which standard? USB Power Delivery (PD) for everything; on top of that, PPS for Samsung and Pixel phones, AVS for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, PD 3.1 for 140 W.
• How many devices at once? On a multi-port charger, power is shared: add up the needs and read the sharing table on the charger’s page.
• Does it overheat? A charger that gets too hot cuts its power: prefer a model whose heat was measured by a lab.
• What price? Pay for the speed your device can take, no more, and add a 5 A cable if the charger goes beyond 60 W.

How do I know what charger power I need?

Look up your model in our “Which charger for…?” pages: each gives the maximum the device accepts, measured by a lab whenever possible. A charger of that power, or a little more, is enough.

What is a GaN charger?

A charger whose components are made of gallium nitride rather than silicon: it runs cooler and fits in a smaller case for the same power. Many recent chargers above 30 W use GaN.

Is a charger that’s too powerful dangerous?

No, as long as it follows the USB Power Delivery standard: the device and charger agree on the power, and the device only takes what it accepts.

Does the cable change the speed?

Yes, above 60 W: a standard USB-C cable (3 A) tops out at 60 W; you need a 5 A cable for 100 W, and a 240 W cable for 140 W.
